A victory night for our education champions
Illinois State Representative Delia Ramirez in the 3rd Congressional District and businessman and activist Jonathan Jackson in the 1st, led a number of election night victories for CTU-endorsed candidates.
CHICAGO, June 29, 2022 — The Chicago Teachers Union released the following statement tonight following the Election Day vote in the June 28 Illinois primary:
The Chicago Teachers Union made history tonight by helping two of our endorsed candidates, Illinois State Representative Delia Ramirez in the 3rd Congressional District, and businessman and activist Jonathan Jackson in the 1st, to get closer to the US Capitol. These victories, along with a number of victories in hard-fought Illinois Senate, House and Cook County Board races, mean Chicago public school educators will have more voices at all levels of government – from city to federal – to champion student rights, an anti-racism agenda, fully-funded classrooms, and safer school communities.
The power of our union comes when we come together to speak with one voice, and tonight the voices of thousands speaking with one voice were heard. Voters affirmed fearless and visionary leadership. They affirmed their willingness to challenge racial, social, housing, health care and environmental injustices. They affirmed the work of true champions for education, workers, families and the needs of all of our school communities.
It is a movement from the base; from the grassroots of our city’s neighborhoods and communities. We thank all of our sponsored candidates for their vulnerability, strength and sacrifice. We thank United Working Families, a coalition dedicated to the humanity of the many, not the desires of the privileged few.
Our movement is growing, here at home and in Washington DC It’s a movement that made tonight a historic night for our union, and a movement that will continue to grow as we remain united in our work for the schools that our students deserve.
