Illinois’ must-see list forgets northern Illinois
With a new year comes new plans or plans that we didn’t have access to in 2020 or 2021. Day trips, weekends, vacations; this has all been in limbo for two years, it seems.
A 2022 edition of a list promoting Illinois’ must-see places overlooked what the Rockford area has to offer. Only one place in Rockford was on the 25 mentions list.
If you were to base yourself on this list, there isn’t much to do outside of Chicago and the surrounding area.
Yes, it can be assumed that there are plenty of sights in and around the Windy City, but Illinois has so much more to offer.
The travel website, familydestination.com, posted a list of the 25 best things to do in Illinois, with Chicago landing on the list 10 times, not counting 3 things in roughly the same area.
Maybe that’s because I live a short drive away, but why is Woodfield Mall rated as Illinois ‘# 5 best’ attraction? Yes, it is the shopping mecca for the region, but do you have to really surpass natural beauty like Anderson’s Japanese Gardens?
Anderson Japanese Gardens, which received the title of “most beautiful Japanese garden in North America” was not on the list, but two other similar places in Chicago did.
Nicholas Conservatory and Gardens / Sinnissippi Lagoons and Gardens
Another Rockford gem with so much beauty and so much to offer hasn’t made the list yet, unlike Grand View Drive, which isn’t all that exciting.
Size doesn’t matter on this list.
Although this is the most complete adolescent tyrannosaurus rex discovered to date, Jane’s House, the Burpee Museum did not make the list, but a library in Gurnee did. The same goes for Gurnee Mills Mall and Six Flags Great America.
Worthy of being on the list?
Some of the locations on the list are deserving while others are puzzles in the sense that while unique, do they qualify as the best in the state?
Sears Landing Willis Tower on the list is certainly deserved. The building is synonymous with Chicago and offers a truly unique view.
How could they not mention those places?
Tourist spots like Rock Cut State Park, Rockford Speedway, Klehm Arboretum, Tink Swiss Cottage and countless others are candidates for must-see Illinois attractions.
The only Rockford attraction to make this list? Discovery Center Museum.
