Pat Shurmur takes issue with Joe Judge’s characterization of New York Giants culture
Pat Shurmur responded to Joe Judge’s claims that players were planning vacations and lacking focus during his tenure as head coach of the NY GIants
After the New York Giants’ resounding loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday, head coach Joe Judge embarked on an 11-minute defense of his team’s culture, which he says he wants to improve from the ground up. .
On Wednesday in Denver, Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur took issue with the idea that he had led a country club-style atmosphere during his two seasons as Giants head coach, from 2018 to 2019.
“I obviously – it’s not an accurate assessment. But beyond that, I have no comment, ”Shurmur told reporters.
However, it should be noted that during Shurmur’s tenure as head coach, the NY Giants had a ping-pong table in the locker rooms, players frequently gathered to play poker during the part of the day when the media were allowed into the locker rooms, and at one o’clock there were even cornhole boards for players to play.
Former NY Giants wide receiver Golden Tate had his golf bag in his locker for at least half of the 2019 season, and former Giants linebacker Alec Ogletree even bought a poker table his teammates will be able to use while on vacation in 2019.
“There are a lot of teams right now that aren’t in the playoff contention,” Judge said on Sunday. “Okay, whether it’s golf clubs in the locker room or people planning a vacation outside. All right, there’s a lot of pointing, blaming, and yelling. All that kind of stuff, okay, all of that.
“You know what we have in our building, all of that. We have none of that. All that. Our guys know we have one more week this year to be this team. They know we have one more week this year to be this team. And they expect me to show up and give every ounce of football I have in me next week. Do you have that? ”
After practice on Wednesday, NY Giants defensive back Julian Love essentially confirmed that some of the issues the judge mentioned on Sunday afternoon were leaking in the locker room ahead of his arrival.
“I know someone told me that they had mentioned in years past that it was like this,” Love told reporters on Wednesday. “I can attest that I have been here for a few years now. I think luckily you don’t see this. You don’t see guys losing their focus. You see guys like I said paying attention to this game and doing their best. It is a proud thing. You don’t want to just fold, so I think that’s what we’re discussing.
“I don’t know, I think that’s calling him. I call her, just trying to get through the days. I know from my perspective I always felt like I had something to prove, it goes back to two years ago when I was playing the last five games of the season in defense so I couldn’t not allow myself the opportunity to relax because I was demonstrating my abilities. Last year, too, I felt like I was always trying to show who I am as a player. I think it is important. I think as players you take pride in things and that’s what you get. Fortunately, a lot of other guys are taking this approach. They try to do their best for the team, for Joe, for the community.
The New York Giants saw little improvement, despite helping Judge correct the team culture, with just a 10-22 record under Judge, after shurmur finished his tenure two years as the Giants head coach with a meager 8-22 rating.
