Restrictions on IEP Interpreters

CPS has now officially stated that it will pay members who complete IEP interpreting training which can be found on the Safe Schools platform. CPS information with more details (including form to submit for payment) can be found in this Google doc (must be logged into CPS account to access). This is a step in the right direction, and we continue to work to end restrictions that make language access more difficult for parents of students with IEPs who speak a language other than English.

IEP interpreter allowance for the 2021-2022 school year

Many members were not paid for their IEP interpreting work last school year. If you performed three or more times for 1st semester and/or 3 times or more for 2n/a semester, you are eligible for the allowance. We are filing a group grievance on behalf of members who did the interpretation work but did not receive the allowance. Please complete the grievance authorization form and email Eden McCauslin as soon as possible.

The CPS said it was considering alternative options that would give English language learners with an ACCESS score below 3.5 the opportunity to apply to selective enrollment high schools. They also said they were opening a process for teachers to give feedback on the bilingual EOY Reach performance tasks.

We continue to collect donations at CTU Headquarters, 1901 W. Carroll for newly arrived displaced immigrants in Chicago. At this time, we only collect New winter coats, scarves, gloves.

In 2019, we won the Sanctuary language in our contract for the first time, finally after Three years CPS has issued a letter to staff and students/families stating that CPS is a sanctuary school district. This was made possible thanks to the organizing and advocacy work of our members!

The CPS said it can make funds available to schools with an increase in the newcomer/STLS population. If this is the case for your school, please let CTU know!

Member involvement was essential

This work and the progress we have made is not possible without the involvement, advocacy and organization of members. Please email Linda Perales if you have any questions or would like to get more involved!
